I start a new temporary job in a month , im working in the restaurant hoping for some retail experience too and I’m just wanting some advice on how to talk to the customers as im a shy person , like how to get better at knowing what to talk to about and what topics to talk about , how to impress my colleagues and the staff and how to remain calm when under pressure especially as it will get really busy during Christmas as I sometimes struggle with knowing what to do with customer enquiries or when it gets really busy . any advice would be great

If a costumer asks a question and you are unsure of the “right” answer DO NOT be afraid to say, I’m not sure let me ask 🙂 then go ASK someone who WILL know and go back and let the costumer know. Not hard to do. NO ONE starts off knowing everything, it IS OK to ask.Small talk, it depends. I don’t think it’s a waitress job to “entertain” the costumers with small talk. Most people go out to eat with family or friends and DO NOT need someone to wow them with their conversationalist’s skills. YOU are not there to “get to know” costumers. You are there to serve them food and drinks. That simple. You DO need to be attentive, take down orders RIGHT and make sure they have what they need. BUT if you DO need topic, there are always the weather. You will know your way around by the time Christmas comes around so try not to worry about that NOW.And don’t worry about impressing your coworkers. Just do your BEST. Be polite, be helpful.
